Roman festival was held in honor of Ops, the Earth Mother, who was also considered the Great Mother of the Gods. Being a chthonic (underworld) deity that lived inside the earth and made vegetation grow, she was invoked by sitting with hands touching the ground.

Ops essentially translates to “crops” as in “riches, goods” and consiva is derived from conserere (to sow).
