In 1916, George Washington Carver began promoting the peanut. To further his campaign, he published a research bulletin titled, “How to Grow the Peanut and 105 Ways of Preparing it for Human Consumption.” Included in this publication were 3 peanut butter cookie recipes. However, it wasn’t until 1932 that the Schenectady Gazette would publish the first recipe requiring the baker to flatten the dough with a fork, thereby creating the crosshatch marks.
