In 1852 an American named Sam German developed a sweet baking chocolate for Baker’s Chocolate Company. In 1957 Mrs. George Clay submitted a chocolate cake recipe using German’s Sweet Chocolate to the Dallas Morning Star which published it, causing a dramatic rise in the sale of the baking chocolate. Over time, the possessive has been dropped from the recipe name.
